Sail Training - 2023 update
We are no longer able to offer sail training. It's too expensive and difficult for our volunteers to obtain and retain accreditation with the RYA, and without this our insurance does not cover sail training.
Suggestions:
1. Go to CBYC just around the corner in Cardfiff Bay who offer a full range of RYA accredited sail training from absolute beginner onwards as well as power boat courses such as PB2 and Safety Boat. PYC members get a discount (same as CBYC members) - ask the Sailing Secretary or Club Secretary for the discount code, then book online at the CBYC website. Then come back to us to sail, obviously.
2. PYC has 3 RS Quests - experienced helms can easily be persuaded to take out beginners as crews during scheduled races to learn the rudiments of dinghy racing and see whether they enjoy it. The Quests are large, stable, and ideal for beginners (e.g. they have a high boom that won't knock you on the head unlike some boats). contact the Sailing Secretary if you're interested.
3. Come and crew for one of our Enterprise sailors, and help out on the club RIB to run races.
If you join as a sailing member we have an active WhatsApp group that you can use to find out what's going on, to request a sail, and volunteer for activities.
To sail with us you will need to
- be confident in the water in case of capsize
- provide your own wetsuit / drysuit (we can provide buoyancy aids) and other warm gear - you will need shoes that can get wet and gloves can be good.
If you’re interested in sailing with us please contact the club secretary secretary@penarthyachtclub.co.uk
